Immigration officials are to talk with a woman who abandoned her newborn baby on a flight from Samoa about arrangements for her return home soon.

Karolaine Maika, 22, abandoned the baby girl - since called Grace - after secretly giving birth to her on a flight to Auckland on 19 March.

She pleaded guilty in the Manukau District Court last week to a charge of abandonment, and was convicted and discharged.

The Department of Labour says discussions with Ms Maika will focus on arrangements for an early return to Samoa.

Grace is in the care of Child, Youth & Family. She is with extended family in Auckland until long-term arrangements can be made for her.
