Another tourist targeted in Bay of Islands

A Canadian man has been assaulted and robbed by a group of men who befriended him in a Bay of Islands bar in the second attack involving tourists in the area in less than a week.

The 22-year-old told police he was at the Paihia bar on Thursday night and agreed to go with the group to a party in Kawakawa.

However, they stopped their car a few kilometres out of town, took the man's wallet and left him on the side of the road.

On Sunday morning, five men robbed three English tourists sleeping in their car in Paihia at knifepoint.

Police say they shared cigarettes with the men earlier, but declined their invitation to go to a party.

Their car has since been found burned out on Ruapekapeka Road, south of Kawakawa.

Police say the driver of the group's white hatchback in Thursday's robbery is described as large and overweight.
