Two young children remain in a critical condition in hospital, three days after they were hurt in a car fire in Gisborne.

A spokesperson at Middlemore hospital in Auckland says Manaia Namana-Rowe, aged three years, is in a critical but stable condition in the hospital's intensive care unit.

Her brother Rious, aged 22 months, is in Auckland's Starship children's hospital.

A spokesperson there says he is also in an intensive care unit and remains in a critical condition.

The fire started after the children were left alone in the car while their mother went into a shop.

Police examined the car on Friday and found a lighter in the back seat but cannot say whether it started the fire.
