Netball salary cap accusation dismissed

Officials of the trans-Tasman netball competition have dismissed an Australian claim that the competition leaders, the Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic, may be in breach of the salary cap.

Queensland Firebirds coach and former Australian captain Vicki Wilson suspects the Magic's ability to field a shadow Silver Ferns team while remaining under the $300,000 salary cap.

The general manager of competition Anthony Everard says the Magic's books were in order when they were audited last year, and third party payments are allowed.

Mr Everard says athletes consider many factors aside from salary when deciding which team to join, such as lifestyle, family and work commitments and who is coaching the team.
