Supermarket chain to charge for plastic bags

6:14 pm on 17 April 2009

Supermarket group Foodstuffs will start charging customers for plastic bags at its New World, Four Square and Pak'n'Save stores from 3 August.

Foodstuffs managing director Tony Carter says introducing the five cent charge is the next step in reducing the consumption of plastic bags.

Mr Carter says Foodstuffs will use the proceeds to make what he calls a significant contribution to an environmental initiative, the details of which will be announced in August.

The company's North Island Pak'n'Save stores already charge for plastic bags.
