A man is in a critical condition after his car crashed down a bank on the Wainuiomata Hill Road in the Hutt Valley.

The Life Flight Trust says it was called to the scene about 6pm on Monday.

A spokesperson says the car smashed through a safety barrier and a road sign and came to rest about 30 metres down a steep bank.

He says Wellington Free Ambulance staff got the man in his 20s out of the car before assessing him and treating him at the scene.

The spokesperson says the man was flown to Wellington Hospital's emergency department with life-threatening injuries.
