Race Relations Commissioner Dame Susan Devoy says it is not appropriate for her to comment on remarks made by a Danish politician about a Maori welcoming being "uncivilised."
In an opinion piece in a Danish newspaper, Marie Krarup said she was shocked to be welcomed to New Zealand on a recent visit by a dancing, half naked-man, instead of a handshake or salute.
She has since received about 200 emails from New Zealanders, some of whom have accused her of being racist and told her not to return to New Zealand.
A spokesperson for Dame Susan, who took up the job a week ago, says it is not an issue she would comment on, but couldn't say why not.
