Auckland International Airport Ltd says the number of people passing through its gates fell in March.

The airport company says the number of international visitors and domestic travellers declined, which it attributes to Easter falling in April this year compared to March last year.

International patronage fell 6% to 616,000 though the number of flights in and out of New Zealand increased.

Domestically, passenger numbers fell 9% to 506,000.

The number of visitors from India rose 20% due to a cricket tour by India, while those from China rose 10%.

Arrivals from New Zealand's largest tourist market, Australia rose 1%.

However, travellers from Britain and the United States shrunk by a quarter and a fifth respectively.
