Legislation cracking down on mining protests passes third reading

6:52 pm on 16 April 2013

Legislation cracking down on mining protests at sea has narrowly passed its final hurdle in Parliament.

Intentional damage would carry a maximum penalty of 12 months in prison, or a fine of up to $50,000 for an individual or $100,000 for a group.

The bill also gives police or defence force staff the powers to stop, board or detain a protest ship if they believe that a protestor is going to break the law.

It passed its third reading by 61 votes to 60 with the support of the National, ACT and United Future parties.
