New fare system proposed for Auckland commuters

A new method of working out how much to charge for public transport in Auckland is to be sought.

Auckland Transport says the zone system proposed in its 10-year overhaul of the city's transport system has too many flaws.

The agency agrees with many submissions on its regional public transport plan that the zone system favours those heading north and south, but not west.

The original proposal was for a simpler network of more frequent services, but with more transferring required.

Auckland Transport says it accepts more work is needed to ensure the transfers are reliable and easy and the fare system doesn't penalise passengers switching mid-journey.
