Two Romanian men have been remanded in custody after appearing in court in connection with an ATM skimming investigation.

The men, aged 32 and 33, appeared in Wellington District Court on Saturday charged with conspiracy and preparing to commit crime.

Neither applied for bail and both were granted interim name suppression until their next appearance at the district court on Monday.

Detectives arrested the men on Friday after investigating reports earlier this week that two people travelling the country had been trying to fit skimming devices to ATMs in Auckland and Wellington.

The police say the full extent of the men's activity in New Zealand is yet to be determined and the possibility of other people being involved has not been ruled out.
