Whakatane loses sunshine capital claim

6:05 am on 25 April 2009

Whakatane's claims to have been the sunniest centre in New Zealand last year have been rejected by a scientific test which shows its sunshine measuring equipment was faulty.

The Bay of Plenty town has been claiming the title ahead of Blenheim, however a month-long check by NIWA has found the Whakatane District Council recorder was over-estimating sunshine by about 12 minutes per day.

NIWA says although its testing cannot definitively say how much sun Whakatane received last year, the town cannot claim the sunshine crown.

It says Blenheim's sunshine hours remain the highest that have been validated.
