Government consulting on lifting drought status

4:21 pm on 22 April 2013

The Government is consulting with its experts as to whether the drought-status in some regions should be lifted.

Farmers in Bay of Plenty, Taranaki, and parts of Waikato say rainfall over the past week has been a drought breaker.

The North Island and the West Coast of the South Island have been in a state of drought after an extremely dry summer.

The president of Federated Farmers in Bay of Plenty says in the past week, his farm has received more rain that it has in the last six months.

John Scrimgeour said some farms were swamped.

Primary Industries Minister Nathan Guy said official-drought status would not be reversed until at least May.
