Maori public servants may work on own iwi claim

10:16 pm on 27 April 2009

The Government may look at whether Maori public servants could be seconded to work on their iwi's Treaty claims to help speed up the claims process.

The idea was proposed at a Government-hosted hui called last week to discuss with claimant groups how to settle claims by the Government's target date of 2014.

Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations Minister Chris Finlayson says the claims and the consultation process are expensive for iwi.

He says he is open to the idea of members of a claimant group who work in the public service to be seconded to the iwi to help with the claim, as the Government needs to help iwi in practical ways.

Mr Finlayson says he has yet to discuss the issue with his colleagues.
