Police say people evacuated after a meth lab explosion in Mount Maunganui can now return to their homes.

Ten houses were evacuated after an explosion on Ocean Beach Road shortly before 4am on Tuesday.

Inspector Karl Wright St-Clair said investigators have confirmed it was caused by an illegal meth lab.

The explosion happened shortly before 4am at a house between Girven Road and Concord Avenue.

Firefighters rescued a man who was taken to Tauranga hospital with burns.

A second man, who left the house, was picked up by police officers later at a nearby address. He has now been released.

No charges have been laid.
