A man in his 70s has died after the car he was driving collided with a four-wheel-drive in the Selwyn District.
A police spokesperson says emergency services were called to the intersection of Coaltrack and Bealey roads at 11.45am on Tuesday.
The spokesperson says the man died at the scene and his wife, who was a passenger in the car, is being treated at Christchurch Hospital with serious injuries.
The driver of the four-wheel drive was taken to hospital with moderate injuries.
The spokesperson says initial indications are that the deceased's car may have travelled through an intersection into the path of the oncoming vehicle.
