An international student has been charged after crashing his car into an Auckland bedroom where a six-week-old baby was sleeping.

George Brown was asleep with his parents in the front room of their house in Mt Eden when the man crashed through the wall about 3am on Thursday.

Police say officers chased the vehicle after it failed to stop for a patrol car on Dominion Road but lost sight of it, before finding it crashed into the house.

The baby's grandfather, Kerry Bartlett, said the boy was taken to Starship Hospital for observation and has since been released.

Mr Bartlett says his daughter Nina and son-in-law Rob Brown escaped injury as well.

Police say the driver, who was also hospitalised, is in New Zealand on a student visa and has been charged with dangerous driving.

He has been released on bail but has had to surrender his passport.
