NZ pulls peacekeepers out of Syria

9:33 pm on 25 April 2013

New Zealand has withdrawn its two peacekeeping personnel from Syria.

The pair, who were working in Syria as United Nations Military Observers, have been moved to Israel.

The Defence Force says one of the peacekeepers was shot at over an extended period in March.

That followed the abduction of the other observer in December last year; he was released later in the day.

The Defence Force says it has decided it will no longer allow its peacekeepers to remain in Syria while the threat remains at that level.

Four other New Zealand peacekeepers are based in Lebanon and Jerusalem.
