Lawyers for the Crown have indicated the open-ended sentence of preventive detention will be sought for a man who admitted a vicious attack on a Wairarapa real estate agent.
Nigel Whakarau, 38, appeared in the High Court in Wellington on Monday.
He pleaded guilty to kidnapping the agent, assaulting her with intent to rob her and aggravated robbery.
Whakarau arranged to view a house in Carterton in August last year, but after looking around the property he grabbed the agent, bound her hands and taped her mouth shut, and tried to force her into the boot of his vehicle.
The woman managed to grab a screwdriver and stab him in the head before locking herself in the house and raising the alarm.
Justice Miller convicted Whakarau and remanded him in custody for sentencing on 19 June.
The Crown asked the judge to call for extra reports so that preventive detention can be considered.
