Man charged with beating at retirement village

6:26 pm on 29 April 2009

A man has been arrested over a vicious attack on an elderly man at a retirement village in south Auckland.

Louis Watts, 85, was beaten up in his unit at the Seventh Day Adventist Retirement Village in Wiri on 8 April.

A man, 18, was arrested on Wednesday morning and charged with burglary and aggravated wounding. He will appear in Manukau District Court on Thursday morning.

Police say a phone call from a member of the public led to a breakthrough in the case.

Mr Watt's son-in-law, Keith Oddy, says Mr Watts is still bruised and battered, but has since returned home and is coping well.

Mr Watts says he is relieved that an arrest has been made, adding that he and his neighbours are now more wary of their security.
