Paraplegic loses appeal against prison sentence

A man who was left a paraplegic after a police chase and shootout has lost an appeal against a 10-year prison sentence imposed on him.

James Raymond Samuels was jailed by Judge Ingram in September last year after pleading guilty to eight charges of using a firearm against the police.

The charges arose after Samuels and his partner burgled a house, stole a rifle and were chased by the Police for more than 50km.

Samuels' lawyer told the Court of Appeal that Judge Ingram's starting point of 12 years was too high and an inadequate discount was given for Samuels' guilty plea.

However, the judgment says Judge Ingram carefully considered those matters and the sentence should stand.
