New tasers to be trialled

New high tech tasers are being trialled by police for six months.

Police said a pair of X2 tasers have been issued to 20 officers in Wellington to see how they compare to current model the X26.

National operations manager Barry Taylor said the new tasers have important enhancements, such as the ability to fire two cartridges without reloading and a high definition colour camera.

The new model will replace the 900 tasers currently being used if adopted after the evaluation.

Mr Taylor said the X2 is the only new model being considered.
