Teachers benefitting from streaming - not pupils

New research shows schools which group students according to academic ability are helping teachers, not the students.

The University of Canterbury study looked at secondary and intermediate schools, that use ability grouping, or streaming.

The study said the schools believe streaming makes teaching easier and more effective.

But the researchers say being in a lower stream affected the self-esteem of some students and there were more behaviour problems in lower-streamed classes.
