A group of Christchurch residents wants Canterbury Regional Council to take action over a fire which has been burning at a recycling pit for over a month.

The fire began at the Owaka Holdings pit over Easter.

More than 200 people attended a public meeting at the Hornby Working Men's Club on Tuesday night, demanding for the fire to be put out.

Awatea Residents Association secretary Kay Stieller said the fire is making people feel ill and residents are sending an abatement notice to the council.
