The Department of Corrections says a fight that broke out at Christchurch Men's Prison at the weekend involved prisoners from the youth unit.
Acting southern regional commissioner Paul Tomlinson said one prisoner had to be sent to hospital for observation, while another received medical treatment for an injured arm.
He says officers brought the fight under control and no staff were injured in the incident on 27 April.
Three prisoners will face misconduct charges.
