Legislating against street prostitution 'not the answer'

A Ministry of Justice review looking at street prostitution in Manukau says that legislating against it is unlikely to ease community concerns.

Instead, the review says, a comprehensive, localised response is needed.

It recommends increasing community policing, negotiating with sex workers to encourage consideration, and installing additional rubbish bins for waste.

In 2006 the Manukau City Council failed in a bid to bring about legislation banning street workers.

Councillor Dick Quax says the review is not particularly useful. He says the council has done its part by installing cameras and increasing street lighting, and now it's time for legislation.

Mr Quax says the council will push for a meeting with the Prime Minister and local MPs.

Manukau businessman John McCracken, who is part of a group which has been writing to the owners of cars seen in known areas for sex workers, says the report is disappointing.

He says throwing responsibility back to the community has been tried before, and says the group will push for a law change banning street prostitution.
