The Union of Students' Associations has added its voice to pleas for the Government to help fund universities to keep students employed over the summer.

Initiatives suggested to the Government by the Universities of Auckland and Canterbury include increasing the number of summer research scholarships and creating a ten-week summer work programme.

Union of Students' Associations co-president Sophia Blair, says some students will be unable to return to their studies unless they receive support over the summer.

She says it is vital the Government acts quickly to get the initiatives set up this year.
