Poultry show revival

5:40 am on 11 May 2013

Timaru is hosting a poultry show this weekend for the first time since 1885.

The Heartland Poultry Club said hundreds of chickens, ducks, pigeons and cage birds are competing for the title of best bird in show and about 1000 enthusiasts are expected to attend.

Secretary Debbie Phipps said the show received 850 entries from Hamilton to Invercargill, making it the second largest poultry show in the South Island.

Mrs Phipps said poultry shows are growing in popularity with 25 clubs across New Zealand and she hopes it will become an annual event for Timaru.
