Fourth man dies after crash and police chase

7:01 pm on 12 May 2013

The fourth man who was in a car that crashed after a police pursuit in Auckland has died.

A Middlemore Hospital spokesperson said Viane Gaga, who was 18, died on Sunday afternoon after his life support was switched off on Saturday night.

Police have now released the names of Mr Gaga's companions who died on Saturday - two at the scene of the crash in south Auckland and the third in hospital, while he was being operated on.

They are Dominic Stehlin, who was 19, Uesitini Tootoo, 18, and George Lomia, 20.

Counties Manukau District Commander John Tims said police officers chased the car twice but abandoned both pursuits because the speeds, of up to 160 km/h on State Highway 20 and 100 km/h on Massey Road, Mangere, were too high.

He said alcohol was also a factor in the crash and it was a completely avoidable tragedy.

The Independent Police Conduct Authority is investigating.

Deaths 'unnecessary'

The MP for Mangere said the fatal crash will not be the last if the community doesn't step up and help reduce the crime rate for youth.

Su'a William Sio said the deaths of the men, who were from the local area, were tragic and unnecessary.

He said he spent Saturday speaking with some of his constituents, who are anxious about a similar incident happening again.

AA spokesperson Mike Noon said although too many people are dying in pursuits, he believes the police are doing everything they can to stop those deaths.

He said the police are currently changing their pursuit policy, and there's not much else that can be done.
