Air NZ cabin crew begin four-day strike

7:38 pm on 7 May 2009

A four-day strike by some Air New Zealand cabin crew shows no sign of being resolved early.

About 240 union members at the airline's subsidiary Zeal 320 went on strike on Thursday. They want pay parity with crew members employed directly by the airline.

Managers and former cabin crew have been drafted in to fill their positions on flights to Australia and the Pacific.

The Engineering Printing and Manufacturing Union says it is very unlikely there will be talks to end the strike early. It wants the members want to show the airline they are serious.

A picket was held outside the airline's head office in downtown Auckland on Thursday.

Air New Zealand says no flights have been disrupted by the industrial action. It says the flight attendants have been offered a pay rise of 3.9%, which it describes as "fair".

Former cabin crew have been drafted in to keep flights running and managers are working as flight attendants.

Air New Zealand's general manager Bruce Parton says everyone in safety positions are fully qualified cabin crew.
