Camping grounds making a comeback

The great New Zealand pastime of camping appears to be making a comeback.

There are now about 25 more camp grounds nationwide than in 2006, when there was a public outcry and an official report into the dwindling number of camping grounds.

Of the more than 1000 camp grounds, 418 are GST registered commercial holiday parks.

The Holiday Parks Association chief executive Fergus Brown says three years ago that number was at 400.

He says the industry is in good health and largely weathering the recession well, as more New Zealanders decide to holiday at home.

Since 2006, the Department of Conservation has also added six camping grounds to the 300 it manages.
