Fugitive kokako flushed out

The runaway kokako known as Duncan, who was feared dead but turned up in an Auckland suburb a fortnight ago, has finally been caught.

The kokako was recaptured in Glendowie on Tuesday morning.

He had disappeared from the Ark in the Park Reserve in Waitakere two years ago.

Department of Conservation ranger Hazel Speed told Radio New Zealand's Morning Report programme the capture was a team effort.

With help from neighbours, rangers worked out where Duncan lived and his daily routine, and laid out a fine net to catch him.

Ms Speed says Duncan was weighed and checked and is in good physical condition.

He was on his way back to the reserve.
