A New Zealander peacekeeper was abducted from the Syrian border on Wednesday, but later released.

The Defence Force said the army officer works as a miltary observer for the United Nations. He was held for five hours, but then released unharmed.

It said the officer has returned to the UN post at Golan Heights which borders Syria, Israel and Lebanon.

In April, New Zealand withdrew its peacekeepers from within Syria because of the danger created by the civil war which began in March 2011.

The Defence Force said no other information would be made available.
