No job losses during Coastal Pacific suspension

No KiwiRail employees will lose their jobs during the winter suspension of the Christchurch to Picton passenger service.

The Coastal Pacific is closed until spring for the second consecutive year because of a lack of demand since the Christchurch earthquakes.

KiwiRail passenger general manager Deb Hume said there will be no redundancies during that period.

Some staff will work on the TranzAlpine service during the suspension. Others are taking extensive holiday leave.

Ms Hume said the situation will be reviewed in eight to 12 months and expects the Coastal Pacific service to be suspended again next winter.

The Rail and Maritime Transport Union said it is glad there will be no job losses.
