Joel Allan Linwood, 23, has no fixed abode and is described as a prolific car thief.

He is wanted on a warrant to arrest for the unlawful taking of a car from a Dallington address on 7 May. It was later involved in a crash with a four-wheel drive vehicle in Leeston and two passengers in the stolen car were injured.

Mr Linwood fled the scene.

Detective Sergeant Tania Jellyman said Mr Linwood has been linked to a number of other car thefts all over the South Island, including Motueka, South Canterbury and the West Coast.

He was involved in a pursuit a few days before the Leeston crash, when his vehicle was reported to have reached speeds of up to 130km per hour around the eastern suburbs of Christchurch.

Police fear he is going to cause serious harm to someone and say he needs to be taken off the road.
