A police officer has appeared in court on 27 methamphetamine charges.

Peter Pakau was in the Waitakere District Court on Friday where he was also charged with accessing the police computer for dishonest purposes.

Mr Pakau was one of nine people arrested on Friday. The others were gang members and associates.

Detective Inspector Bruce Scott of Waitemata told Radio New Zealand's Checkpoint programme that Peter Pakau faces charges of selling and manufacturing drugs, and conspiring to sell and manufacture them.

Mr Scott said Mr Pakau, an officer for five years, is also charged with passing information from the police computer to a criminal associate.

Mr Pakau's wife has also been charged with fencing stolen property.

Mr Scott said her arrest is not related to the drugs charges.
