Demonstrations organised by Hands Across The Sand are happening from Dunedin to Auckland.

Others will take place on beaches in the United States, Canada and Brazil.

The group opposes the expansion of offshore oil drilling.

New Brighton event organiser Siana Fitzjohn said she is concerned about proposed test drilling in the Canterbury Basin by Anadarko, an American company, which could start this summer.

She said New Zealand should focus on clean energy for the future.
