Disability providers panel seeks to prevent abuse cases

The head of a panel that will review how the Health Ministry monitors residential disability providers says the group will be looking at what needs to be done to prevent cases of abuse.

Consumer advocate, David Russell, has been appointed to oversee an independent panel to review the auditing and monitoring of residential providers.

The move follows the cancelling of contracts held by the South Auckland residential care home, Parklands.

Mr Russell says the review is not an investigation into historic complaints of abuse at Parklands, but the panel will be using Parklands as a case study.

He says the panel hopes to identify gaps and problems in the system so what may have happened at Parklands can never happen again.
