A driver is dead and another is in a stable condition after two logging trucks crashed head-on near the East Coast township of Tolaga Bay.
The crash on State Highway 35 happened just before 1pm on Monday.
Both drivers had to be cut from their vehicles. Police say one driver died at the scene and the other was flown by rescue helicopter to Gisborne Hospital.
One truck had a full load of logs while the other was empty when they collided on Tauwhareparae Road.
Two cranes were brought in to move the trucks and the road was closed until about 8pm.
The police Serious Crash Unit and Commercial Vehicle Investigation Unit are investigating.
