The Parole Board has set release conditions for a repeat drink-driver responsible for four deaths.

Gavin Hawthorn is serving a 10-year manslaughter sentence relating to the death of Lance Fryer in a car crash in Greytown in 2003.

His criminal record dates back to 1979 and includes burglary, drugs and violence offences. This is his eighth term of imprisonment.

Hawthorn's latest sentence ends early in June and by law, he must be released from prison.

The Parole Board on Wednesday set eight release conditions that will last up to six months.

Hawthorn can't drive, drink or consume drugs. He is also not to visit Wairarapa without prior approval and can't contact his victims.
