Sacked NIWA scientist Jim Salinger is involved in mediation with his former employer.
Dr Salinger was fired from the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research in April after more than 20 years' service.
NIWA has not commented on the dismissal, but it is understood the agency accused Dr Salinger of serious misconduct after he commented to the media without its approval.
The sacking sparked a flood of public sympathy for Dr Salinger and criticism of the agency.
A mediation session began in Auckland on Wednesday and was closed to the public.
NIWA will not comment on the meeting saying it is a confidential employment issue.
