There has been a record level of immunisation in New Zealand against seasonal flu.

Halfway into a four-month campaign, the Ministry of Health says 807,539 doses of vaccine has been distributed.

Previously, the highest total was 761,000 vaccination doses recorded over the full season from March to July 2006.

The ministry says the uptake of the vaccine was already well ahead before the swine flu virus broke out.

Public health deputy director of Fran McGrath says the swine flu outbreak highlighted the need to guard against influenza.

Dr McGrath says an additional 125,000 doses of seasonal flu vaccine have already been ordered by the ministry.

This year's vaccine does not protect against swine flu.
