$50m boost for national cycleway

Updated at 10:31 am on 14 May 2009

The Government's plan for a national cycleway is getting a $50 million injection in the Budget.

Prime Minister John Key, who is also Tourism Minister, has announced that a series of "great rides" of New Zealand will be created, with a long-term aim for a network throughout the country.

Mr Key says some promising routes have already been identified and will be revealed in the next couple of months.

An advisory group will be established to investigate other regional cycleway proposals.

Mr Key says the $50 million investment will create jobs through its design and construction as well as a high quality tourism asset in line with the "100% Pure New Zealand" brand.

The Budget is to be delivered on 28 May.
