The New Zealand Government is giving Samoa an extra $6 million in aid money to recover from Cyclone Evan.

In December the storm caused major flooding, wrecked buildings and destroyed crops before moving on to batter Fiji.

Foreign Affairs Minister Murray McCully said the additional funding will ensure buildings can cope with natural disasters in future.

The money will also help restore essential public services and infrastructure.

The extra funding takes New Zealand's overall contribution to the Cyclone Evan recovery to $12.6 million.
