Hamilton council warned of 'risks' of fluoridated water

7:26 pm on 28 May 2013

A visiting Australian anti-fluoride campaigner has told a hearing in Hamilton that the city council can't ignore the risks to residents exposed to fluoridated water.

The Hamilton City Council is holding a hearing to determine whether to continue to fluoridate the water supply.

Andrew Harms says if the council continues to put fluoride in the water, it must take responsibility for adverse health effects and be prepared to compensate residents who suffer health problems.

Waikato medical officer of health Felicity Dumble says claims fluoride causes harm is just misinformation put out by the anti fluoride lobby.

Dr Dumble says children in areas with fluoride have less tooth decay.

The council will make a decision next week.
