Temporary alcohol ban for suburbs

A Christchurch City Council committee has voted to impose a temporary alcohol ban in parts of Riccarton and Ilam.

It follows complaints from residents of alcohol-fuelled anti-social behaviour in the suburbs.

The ban is for six months from 10 June until 10 December and covers an area bounded by Peer Street, Waimairi Road, Maidstone Road, Avonhead Road and Yaldhurst Road.

Alan Bywater, the council's strategic policy unit manager, said on Thursday the ban is in response to a request from the community to deal with anti-social behaviour.

Riccarton and parts of Ilam have become popular places for people to socialise since the entertainment precinct in the central city was severely damaged in recent earthquakes.
