Police have named an elderly driver who died as a result of a crash on State Highway 1 north of Kaikoura.
He was Stuart Whipp, 82 from Blenheim.
Police say his car collided with a truck near the intersection with Kiwa Road at Hapuku about 8.30pm on Wednesday.
A police spokesperson says the driver of the truck was shaken but uninjured in the crash.
The spokesperson says the truck driver had tried to take evasive action and drove off the road in an attempt to avoid hitting the car.
The serious crash team is investigating.
