Man who stabbed elderly neighbour fit to be sentenced

A 20-year-old man who admitted to stabbing his 95-year-old neighbour has been deemed mentally fit to be sentenced.

Jacob Komene attacked war veteran Albert Chant in his west Auckland home in April last year.

Komene pleaded guilty to wounding Mr Chant with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and aggravated robbery.

Psychiatrists who reported on Komene's mental state were cross-examined in the Auckland High Court on Thursday so the judge could determine whether he was capable of admitting the crimes and if sentencing could go ahead.

Komene will be sentenced in July.
