A strong earthquake centered about 760km north-east of White Island was felt in Wellington and Gisborne on Saturday.
The quake measured 6.7 on the Richter Scale.
A GNS Science Seismologist, Brian Ferris, said the quake hit just before 1pm on Saturday afternoon but did not cause any damage.
He said the earthquake had a focal depth of 10km.
