Canterbury's high-performance athletes have a new training facility.
The old high-performance sports centre at QE2 was badly damaged in the February 2011 earthquake and has been demolished.
The $3.5 million Apollo Projects Centre based at Jellie Park officially opened on Thursday night.
High Performance Sport New Zealand chief executive Alex Baumann says the facility is largely funded by the Government and the land was donated by the Christchurch City Council.
Mr Baumann says the centre is the only one of its kind in the South Island and was desperately needed by about 80 athletes.
It features a netball court, gym and pool.
